What is Maharishi Sthapatya Veda?
Homes in Harmony with Nature
Cypress Villages’ homes all share a unique quality you won’t find in most green communities—they’re designed according to the principles of Maharishi Sthapatya Veda (MSV), also known as “Vastu.”
MSV is an ancient East Indian architecture system that aims to create harmony in the environment and the individual. Much like Feng Shui, MSV employs precise measurements and specific principles as guidelines for homes that foster health, wealth, happiness and overall wellbeing.
Maharishi Sthapatya Veda Principles
The heart of MSV architecture centers around three core principles: direction, proportion and placement of rooms. In large part, these principles are determined by the sun (the most powerful heavenly body in our solar system) and its effect on the environment and human physiology. For instance, because the early-morning sun offers energy and warmth as it rises, one key tenant of MSV is that homes should have East-facing orientation and entrances in alignment with the sun’s path.

Natural Building Materials
In line with principles of modern green building, the ancient system of MSV recommends building with natural, non-toxic materials that promote health and which are suitable to the local climatic conditions. Suitable materials include naturally treated and painted wood, bricks, rammed earth and adobe and straw bale. Natural finishes are also recommended, such as clay stucco, marble and tiles, natural fibers for carpets, curtains and furniture, and healthy, natural, low VUC odorless paint, glues and wallpaper.
Because we at Cypress Villages are working to create the most harmonious, environmentally friendly homes possible, the MSV building system fits right in with our vision. To learn more about the MSV architectural principles behind our homes, just give us a call!
